Firmware Password Protection

Pre-Flight:

The Open Firmware Password Protection Application is on your install CD in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.
This folder is hidden on the Leopard DVD.
It can be used on most PPC and INTEL based computers.
Is the same thing as the BIOS password on a Windoz PC.

When enabled, it will block most of the secret startup keys including,

the ability to use the "C" key to start up from a CD-ROM disc.
the ability to use the "N" key to start up from a NetBoot server.
the ability to use the "T" key to start up in Target Disk Mode (on computers that offer this feature).
the ability to start up in Verbose mode by pressing the Command-V key combination during startup.
the ability to start up a system in Single-user mode by holding down the Command (apple key) and S key during startup.

When active, you will see the image BELOW, when you BOOT by holding down the OPTION key (ALT) key on power up.

Image on the newer INTEL based computers.

Image on the older PPC based computers.

NOTE: The image above can NOT be seen on an external LAPTOP monitor.

Warning:
The password can be broken by any one of the following:

By any Admin user.
Physical access to the inside (replace the LOGIC board) of the computer.
When the computer is started up in Mac OS 9.
When the amount of RAM is changed and the PRAM is reset three times.
