Hello all...My name is Rich Caiado from Long Island.
Recently Connie told me she posted some pictures to Gary's Website. Man, was I surprised at what a great job she did. She caught the true essence of Gary, with giving friends and family a chance to share their thoughts and feelings. As I read all the wonderful stories Gary shared with his tech friends as well as family in California and Hawaii, I was truly amazed at the broadness of his friendships.
Now I'd like to add another side of Gary that only few know. I grew up with Gary as well as Dan, Jean, Mary, Bobby, Ricky S. and Sue. We all shared different experiences with Gary and I'm sure they have stories to tell, but I will tell mine. I think we became friends in a group of typical, crazy, 14 year old, long haired teenagers. Gary's home was like a base to us. His awesome parents welcomed us at their home as if we lived there. Never a problem. Many a blizzard would keep us up till 6am drinking beer, and then the inevitable would happen -- cruising in Mr. Sullivan's blue Chevy Impala station wagon. We'd pile in and Gary would drive through the snow banks and snow covered roads, and then spinning donuts in the John Glenn Parking lot. One summer, somebody in the back threw out a Lit pack of firecrackers right in front of a cop car passing in the other direction. I could see Gary's eyes looking into the rear view mirror as the cop spun around with his lights and siren on. Gary floored the pedal and we ducked into a driveway. Our experiences together would continue with weekends in Pennsylvania, riding dirt bikes, shooting guns, and drinking beer (pix to prove). Gary and I lived together for awhile in the same house from which I am writing this letter. Actually most of our friends lived in this house at one time...Gary, Danny, Jim, Mike and Gary's talking computers. Even Mr. Sullivan did a few days here!!
I didn't share Gary's zest for technology, but he never held that against me. We always had talks about science fiction, though. Gary once said to me, "There isn't a science fiction movie I don't like," and I agreed. We spoke about dirt bikes, guns, photography, cars, and later computers when I finally reached that level back in the 90's. Later our paths would take different courses. Gary's was drawn to the west coast to be closer to his brother and work. He always spoke about his famly with such pride and love. When he left for California it was very sad for all of us. There was a big party here attended by friends and family. I'm sure Gary destroyed those pictures.
Deb and I were fortunate to see Gary several times when he lived in California, and to meet a very special person in Gary's life...Connie. (Hi Connie). Our encounters would continue when Deb and I went to Honolulu in November, 2007 to see my niece, Lara. Gary was like a professional tour guide. Giving up his time, he would take Deb and I everywhere around the island, giving us tidbits of info that only he would know.
Recently I retired from my job in law enforcement after 25 years. After my surprise party at Joe and Sandi's home, I was informed by Deb that Gary had planned to be there for me. However, God had different plans.
We all handle death differently. I know I do, after losing family members and close friends. I have come to accept life's give and takes. I learned differently a long time ago. But Gary's is different. He touched a lot of people in so many ways. We all know that. If Gary was looking down on us, and I know he is, he would be saying to me, Connie, and all of us..."LIVE WELL, LAUGH OFTEN AND LOVE. DO NOT BE SADDENED. WE WILL ALL MEET AGAIN."...The world is gonna smile alittle less without him..
Reflecting back upon our discussions of science and theories, I would like to think Gary is just time-traveling around the galaxy past VY Canis Majoris, AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT, FULL THROTTLE, HAIR ON FIRE, YELLING AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS!!!...He would have it no other way...........
Farewell brother.......
